Urinary excretion of albumin is generally significant of a renal damage. While in case of declared nephropathy the excretion of albumin is usually higher than 300 mg/day, an excretion rate ranging from 30 to 300 mg/day (called microalbuminuria) is often an early marker of nephropathy. Monitoring urinary albumin is thus recommended for diabetic individuals who are at high risk of developing nephropathies with irreversible renal damages.
Urinary albumin is also increased in case of physical exercise or during urinary infection.
